I do not know any of my conservative friends and acquaintances who oppose gay marriage...I think there is a group that does...but like most sweeping generalizations, I do not think "social conservatives" are monolithic any more than "progressives" or "liberals" are....So, at least in my view, I happen to agree with you about those who seek to stymie gay marriage. I think it could have been more widely accepted if we called it something else....a compromise...but in the end the rights of gay people to marry were upheld. Popular views on most social issues will evolve over time.
