Libreoffice and Openoffice are the suites like Office

I use Abiword which stands by itself. Gnumeric is the spreadsheet standalone.

There are others I'm sure.

I use Libreoffice which has handled anything I've brought home from work in Office.

Doug,

Echoing Steve Harris's rec, I am very happy with LibreOffice. For a word replacement you would use LibreOffice Writer.

When saving files, LibreOffice Writer defaults to .ODT (ODF Text document), but it is a simple matter to save as a Word file instead. When I expect to share a file with others, I always choose to save as .DOC (Word 2003). I never use .DOCX (unless I hate the person I am sharing with).
