Mercy, Christine, but you have given me a plateful at the buffet on this one! I want to give it some thought before attempting to answer all the questions you have raised.

Let me begin by saying that I do NOT see cigarette-smoking as a civil-rights issue; rather, it is an issue of one faction force-feeding another "for their own good." As well, it is a method of taxing the already ovetaxed California tobacco user. When we smokers are gone, what do you suppose the next target for taxation in the name of "what's good for us" will be? I do not think it will be tea--herbal or otherwise.

Of the utmost importance, a respected member of this thread has expressed a desire to quit smoking, and I do not want to write anything that might in any way hamper MSB's efforts in this endeavor! We smokers are highly suggestible! STAY WITH IT, MSB. You have my support and encouragement!

My choice for nicotine gum over nicotine patches is completely anecdotal but has nothing to do with the "oral satisfaction" that the gum is said to have that the patches do not. With both modalities, one has to guard against trading one addiction for another. Accidentally, I discovered a unique use of the patches but would hesitate to advise anyone else to use the patches as I did.

I read most of Adair Lara's columns, but prefer Jon Carrol and Arthur Hoppe. I mourn the loss of Herb Caen and Mike Royko (Chicago Tribune). Things aren't the same without them.

Christine, truly, I savor your incisive questioning and will tell you what I think after I've thought a bit.

But now it's my turn: What is your take on NOX devices and other knee-jerk legislation California contiues to push through "for our own good?"

I think Holly and I would say that "second-hand smoke" poses negligible dangers compared to automotive and industrial pollution. (And your beloved fireplaces and incense?)

Christine,

There is something I forgot to address in my answer to your post. The nicotine gum I am referring to is Nicorette and has been available only since 1984. Up until last year, it was a prescription item, as were the nicotine patches, at which time both became available on an over-the-counter basis.

There are several brands of nicotine patches, but to my knowledge Nicorette is the only brand of nicotine gum. Whatever nicotine gum you used that long ago could not have been Nicorette.

Christine:

I would resolve the issue by getting all governments out of the decisions that must rightfully be made by individuals.

I would also get rid of the DEA, break the back of the Colombian and Mexican and Golden Triangle drug lords and RE-legalize all drugs including hemp, heroin, cocaine, etc. (that's right, "RE" -- they were all legal once). This would have to be done in a FREE society where individuals are empowered (as they were once after 1776).
