Things might change of course, but for now it looks bleak for progressives.
The Democrats will never go as low as Trump did to win.

Tit-for-tat is not a winning strategy, it is for bullies and historic failure.

It may be bad for Dems; but if we/they adopt Trump's hateful ignorant conspiracy and fear-based memes, the WORLD WILL EVEN GET WORSE than this current and near term tragedy.

This is a point in history where the consequences will inform the voters in the next election.

The (surviving) Democrats and critical thinking GOP coverts will be back for change, when the Republican costs are to be paid.

The (D)'s will come back as they usually do, after (R) government and Trump have driven us into a ravine they can't deny. The (D)'s will fix it, get us back on track, undo the damage they can, all the while being demonized and obstructed by the (R)'s. Eventually, the (R)'s will convince enough malcontents, gerrymander, lie, cheat and steal another election. Wash, rinse, repeat...

I agree with you that all the (D)'s leaders are all too old. So are their ideas. They aren't going to fix that. Perhaps it's the (D)'s that will fade into irrelevancy, and a new party will take their place. I'm ready.
