But water vapor is probably the cause of the slight warming we've had and will likely be the solution to the problem if it becomes a real problem. Water vapor is a GG, but the salient point about it w/r/t warming is that it doesn't stay in the atmosphere. It is part of the hydrologic cycle, and as such, it gets quickly returned to earth as rain, snow, whatever. That doesn't happen with CO2. It remains in the atmosphere for a hundred years and when enough of it is there and the earth warms to certain levels, it begins feedback cycles that amplify its effects. And there is so much of it buried in the ground, especially in permafrost areas, and in the oceans, that once the feedback effects get going, it becomes hard or even impossible to stop. Your faith in private enterprise to solve any problem is touching. There is no doubt that it can be very powerful. But it requires government help to solve longer term slow payback problems, to set floors that prevent a race to the bottom, and to do the basic research that leads to really big breakthroughs. A very good beginning primer on the history of the science that is the foundation of our understanding of climate is at this web site, founded and run by a physicist who is also a climatologist and historian of science:history.aip.org The experimentation, evidence and reasoning behind it is robust. Indeed, when the Koch brothers funded a project at Berkeley to debunk it a few years ago, the scientist who led the project (Richard Muller) and had been a skeptic ended up changing his mind after doing in depth research on it.
