Jeff,

For the example you give, I like (a) better, and in general I think the euphonic considerations are paramount. I think this works wether we use the initials or make the initials into an acronym-word, but there may be some exceptions I'm not thinking of at the moment.
Maybe others have better ideas on this one.

Jeff,

It has always been my understanding that one uses "an" before a word starting with a vowel or an "h". Otherwise use "a" for non-vowel and
"h" words.

I vote for sound.

For instance, with the "H", is it ...

"a" History book, or "an" History book. (I say "a")

but, try this one ...

"a" historical anomaly, or "an" historical anomaly. (I say "an")

Thus, I think it should be "an" SI thread, pronouncing it "an Ess Eye".
