I agree with that. Esp. from a major national news organization.

We do not root for Mr. Trump to fail; we root for the nation to succeed and prosper.

While obviously I root for the later, oddly enough to some extent I root for the former even though I (reluctantly) voted for Trump. I want him to fail to impose trade restrictions. To the extent he really meant it when he said he wanted to take citizenship away from anyone who burned an American flag I want him to fail. (Although I suspect it was just Trump being a pandering blowhard, and not a serious plan.) Etc.

Its similar to how I wanted Obama to fail. Perhaps there are more areas of agreement with Trump (lower taxes, possibly deregulation and judicial appointments) to go along with all the strong areas of disagreement, but to the extent a president pushes bad policy and bad political ideas I want him to fail that effort.

In neither case (at least for me and I think I'm far from alone in this), did "I want him to fail" mean I want the country to fail.
