Methinks you underestimate the cultural divide. As nice as it might be to believe in the rational voter, most voters go for someone with whom they identify culturally. It's a pragmatic country. Most people will embrace what works. As long as it is pitched by one of "us" not by "the other." Most people don't know what works. They believe what someone with whom they identify tells them. That's how so many people can believe, for example, that trade protectionism will fix things.
