What about the part that states: "With a few standard exceptions, abbreviations are avoided in ordinary writing." Sorry for the late editing.

I do agree that the sound is more important than the letter.

Also, would it be "S.I." or "SI"?

Of course with my dyslexic complicated dysphoric induced dysphasis, I could be wrong!

I never got the hang of some of the 'H' words. Hotel and hour each have a different rule, yes?
