Interesting bit of history. Thanks for posting.

In my own lifetime, there were decades where people bought American cars and had a large numbers of choices regarding color, options, even type of fabric for seats. Each choice priced separately. It was too many choices and made for laborious decision making. When foreign manufacturers brought in cars with limited options and body styles, the public adopted that approach pretty quickly, or so it seemed.

Now the foreign car market, actually the whole market, seems pretty blah to me. Everything kind of looks alike. Could be the time is ripe for something in between re customization.
