The SATA cable suppliies power from the USB port. USB drives get their power from the USB port. You don't need external power for a SATA cable.

A SATA cable is faster as you don't have to mount the drive in a USB case.

this USB to SATA converter supposedly has a power supply. This is not clear from the description, but the 1. answered question states it whereas the 2. answer says no. amazon.com

As a rule, any time you convert, speed suffers.

You pay for what you get, some of these cable do not connect that well, and they won't work in some cases. The one from Seagate connects perfect no issues.
