Paul,
Re -- HP to Introduce $799 Pentium MMX/200 PC..

Cyrix and AMD will not be able to maintain this level of pricing. In a couple of months the 233 Mhz pentium will be priced at this level.

The MediaGX wouldn't have reached the 233 Mhz, and AMD's K6 to be priced at this levels will have to sold much below cost (given AMD's yields).

Furthermore with the redesign for the sub-500 and sub-1000 PC's, AMD and Cyrix will be left still further behind the low price treadmill.

To: Paul - I have been an enthusiastic follower of this thread, and have greatly appreciated the informative posts you contribute. I have owned Intel for several years, and continue to own it because I believe it is one of the best long term investments anyone can have. But I am not a computer engineer, and I have some nagging questions in my mind about the nature of Intel's chip technology - essentially, how proprietary is it really? Is or will Intel be able to produce technology that AMD, Cyrix and others will not be able to clone or copy? My impression now is that the main thing holding back AMD is their inability to manufacture quality chips in quantity. Otherwise, their technolgoy is competitive with Intel. Is this true? I believe Intel is striving hard to technology-distance themselves from the field, and thereby put an AMD at both a technology and manufacturing disadvantage. But I don't know if Intel will be able to pull this off? AMD seems to be able to shadow Intel pretty closely, and I am afraid they will continue to be able to do this. Thanks for any thoughts you have about this.

Paul:

Thanks for the post re sub $800 Intel PC from HP.

WSJ quoted the executive in charge of HP's consumer division as follows:

"While both Cyrix and AMD have met demands for their chips to date, Mr. McKinney said their ability to provide massive volumes of low-end chips for H-P is still untested, while Intel's capacity as a supplier is well-proven."

Where have we heard this before?

Best Regards

Paul, re:HP to Introduce $799 Pentium MMX/200 PC and $1099
Pentium II/233 MHz PC

Just a small correction...according to article, the $1099 computer is a Pentium 233MMX. The PII 233 is probably priced between $1300-$1500, although it doesn't say in the article. Still very good news that one of the Big 4 sticks with Intel for its entire product offerings.

Paul,
RE: "Gary and Intel Investors - HP to Introduce $799 Pentium MMX/200
PC and $1099 Pentium II/233 MHz PC"

Sounds great or is this good or bad news for Intels stock price?
Sounds like a mixed bag. Good news is that Intel can compete in the sub-$1000 market. Bad news is that they have to do it...because it might cannibalize their higher end chips.
