Social Security was NEVER supposed to be about taking care of your parents.

Once upon a time I found myself thinking about the responsibility of kids to take care of their parents. My recollection is vague but it was about the time when I started thinking seriously about retirement and how much I would need. I assumed it was my job to take care of my parents. Others didn't necessarily see it that way. And some people couldn't if they wanted to. And some people were comfortable walking away. I recall recognizing that a big benefit of SS was that it relieved us all of having to support our parents big time, and wasn't that nice that we could focus on getting into a position to care for ourselves.

So, whether it was supposed to be or not, the net result was relief from that expense of supporting our parents.

SS takes care of everybody, because everybody gets old. It's really one of the best things the government does.
