Hiya, Christine -- <<Most Californian adults do NOT smoke>> So what? The numbers/percentages don't matter.

<<It's true that this new law is a little rough around the edges>> As in whether or not it's constitutional? I'd say so...

<<If an individual bar owner with no employees wants to risk his
health due to second hand smoke, that is definitely his choice.>>

That's so, and if the employees want to do the same thing? Shall an owner certify that all his employees smoke? Does the owner fire those who complain, thereby risking lawsuits in the process? I think not. With very rare exceptions I feel that it can best be left up to the management of the establishment how best to handle the issue. Let those rare exceptions be subject to rightly punitive legal actions, and leave the rest of the tavern industry alone!

<<We have a striking billboard here in San Francisco>>
I'm delighted that San Francisco billboard labor laws are so enlightened - wish to God that all billboards would go on strike permanently. And as far as "whose rights are paramount", I always thought that in the US of A everybody's rights are equal...

There are two glamourously dressed people, a man and a woman, looking like they are out of a forties movie, and the man is saying "Mind if I smoke?" And the woman answers, "Care if I die?" This says it all for me as far as whose rights are paramount in this debate.

Right. He smokes a cigar, she kicks the bucket. Cretinous. This sort of thing isn't gonna convince anyone with a brain either to stop, or not to start.
