Mornin' All, There is a letter to the editor, from a resident of Largo, Florida, in this morning's SF Chronicle, stating that his company will no longer hold conventions in California because of the smoking prohibition. I'm sure companies in other states will follow suit. California stands to lose a lot of revenue over this one. It has been my experience that most bar employees themselves smoke. To say California's smoking law is "a little rough around the edges" is an understatement. It provides no penalties for the smoker, only for the business owner, putting said business owner in the unenviable position of enforcing the law or paying industrial-strength fines. The lawbreaker smokes and skates; the business owner plays policeman or pays. Idiocy at its loftiest! Here's a link to Arthur Hoppe's column re passing laws to protect people from themselves. Are you another one of those knee-jerk far right people who think that every attempt at improving the public health is going to end up in a fascist state, Jeff? I'm a little tired of arguments like that. I also dispute your assumption that everybody's rights are equal in the United States. You definitely do NOT have the inherent right to harm me. Are you so inconsiderate that it is beyond you to step outside and smoke, or smoke in a sealed room, or smoke in a bar which is owner operated? Is this really a significant infringement on your liberties?
