>>Perhaps. But we really don't know that, do we?<<

As has been pointed out to you, it was pursued during the Bush admin., no voter fraud found at ANY level that could effect an election. A very few isolated cases, mostly mistakes, not intended to sway any election, not even dogcatcher. So YES, we DO know that!

The ONLY reason to continue to pursue it is attempts at voter suppression, such as you propose as a 'solution' to the non-problem!.

We have no idea.

We DO have an idea, a very good idea.

We don't have a complete audit trail but the lack of reported incidents of voter fraud is strongly suggestive and we do have a very good sense using simple analysis of the feasibility and probability of fraud.

I think that is a difficult point because there are a LOT of people who don't want a national ID card. But I think it will be tolerable as a combined voter registration/voter ID.

The opposition over the years has been strong, mostly from the right as I recall, but my memory is dim.

Even assuming it were possible to overcome the resistance, think about the level of effort in setting that up, getting and verifying applications from everyone of voting age in the country, distributing cards that are tamper- and forge-proof, and then dealing with replacements when folks stick them in a drawer or wherever and then can't find them four years later. Half the votes would end up being provisional. And all because we can't absolutely confirm a negative.
