and next, all pc's will be dumped for little boxes on your TV, yada, yada, yada...There's nothing fundamentally wrong with dropping prices to gain or maintain market share, look at where the demand for your product is. OTOT, Packard Bell could probably come out with a sub 100 pc and I doubt it would adversely affect the quality box makers. I disagree with the notion that pc's have become commoditized. Perhaps for the entry level user, but the beauty of the pc market is that there is a continous upgrade cycle bore out of necessity. How many pc users do you know that "downgraded" on their next unit? Without exception every person I have talked with when upgrading is discussed says that they want a machine with more power, memory, graphics, sound, and hey, if it does windows<g> so much the better...Even if the sub 1000 was a "loss leader", I think by expanding the low end market, the higher end will follow.
