Read a piece in Foreign Affairs from last summer that made a strong case for the Crimea annexation being sudden and reactionary - not premeditated. Primarily driven by the need to protect the Sevostopol naval base.

Ukraine didn't need the Euro or Nato. In exchange for Ukraine giving up all of their nukes, we promised to defend them.

Another reason our word isn't worth a shit today.
