>>>So far your answer seems to be it doesn't bother you much at all because you've met plenty of people who seem to rise above what was done to them as children. I know people who were raped as kids, and they are doing OK as adults too... <<<

It doesn't bother me much. I know the world is full of mystery, some of which can't be reconciled via the limits of science. Some people reject mystery altogether as just a temporary gap between scientific achievement and reality, which will be resolved with more science. I contend mystery is an element of temporal experience that can't be dismissed altogether. Without mystery, you don't have utopia, you have absolute lack of purpose. You seem to see religion as myth attempting to account for mystery and that the myth has been overcome by reason and scientific endeavor. I'm not going to argue against that position, nor would I argue the alternative. You view the alternative (religion) as having a crippling effect on children. We have already agreed (I think) that Christian Schools do not hold kids back in academic achievement. In fact we see the opposite, they do better at what schools are supposed to do. I think we could agree that they present a principled way of life. Then there may be some nonsense or extremes that are misguided by well intentioned people. I say "may be" because I don't want to argue that issue either.

Rape committed by people with evil intentions, who can be grouped with heinous brutal beasts, is hardly on the same level of harm that is normally committed by a well meaning parent, who encourages prayer and clean living. Rape is necessarily harmful to the max. I'm conceding that harm could be done in a religious setting, although it is not necessarily always the case. I've met some very fine people who were raised in a religious setting and are still religious.
