Attended the CES in Las Vegas and noted that DISH and Philips announced a new partnership where Philips will market and manufacture IRDs through its global retail distribution network. DISH also announced that Bloomberg Interactive will be using DISH for PCs.

Especially like the JVC antenna and D-VHS recorder at $799. JVC has a prototype HD-VHS recorder for future HDTV transmissions by DISH.

DirecTV and RCA announced HDTV transmissions on two channels beginning in the fall. This could be very bullish to USSB and HDTV set manufacturers like RCA and Zenith which will be first to market.

My read from meetings at the CES is that local broadcasters are very enthusiastic about HDTV believing they can reclaim a lot of lost business to the cable companies. The new digital transmissions by local broadcasters reach out over 70 miles and deliver crystal-clear, digital audio and video with no loss of quality to even the most remote receivers.

Most likely future HDTV model appears to be local broadcasters to provide local channel digital content via direct broadcasting/antennas combined with DBS companies/antenns providing non-premium and premium national channels and PPV channels, and, cable companies specializing in convergence offerings. If so, DBS companies should continue to grow at about a 35% annual clip during the next three to five years.

HDTV could be the best tech that DBS companies could ever hope for. My read is that USSB, DISH and Zenith are the best pure HDTV plays.

I own shares of DISH. Anyone else here own shares of USSB and ZE?
