In the past (mi 1980s) I thought customs and border people was singling me out perhaps by the way I looked.

Then after exchanging experience with other people it dawned on me that the border people just need to be mean and unreasonable.

I can be welcomed in DC (went to visit (THE ANT) just after the officer stamped the same page I had an Iranian work and residency permit. No questions asked.

I was harassed entering from Canada into Boston and spent a decade without going to the US after that.

It is just how bad the officer woke that morning up or his boss told them troops to be mean that day.

I was forced to open all my suit cases by a young German officer who called his boss to look some Hippo bones handcrafts a friend asked me to bring.

Two days later met the same officer in a bar. He had curly hair and was easy to spot. I told him I know from somewhere. He froze and looked a bit cautious. I explained and then he smiled. I a=told why that day he picked me as I always passed without a glance.

He said: Orders of the boss. He looks to the camera and tell. Track that guy and I want to know everything he carries. Bad luck for you that day. You can pass there for daily for the next 10 years no one would look at you.
But he can spot a 86 year old fellow. Like he did today. And tell me to open all his suitcases.

when i visited italy i had to repeatedly submit my passport to the same immigration agent w/i a span of 15 seconds as he kept giving me my passport back without entry stamp, waving me through as i was in a line of american passport holders and my passport was blue coloured

finally he caught on, ah, a trinidad passport, need to stamp

lucky i was paying attention, else i would have entered italy illegally but right through the rome airport

i like the italians :0)
