I was a big cheerleader for that several dollars ago and got no response on this board.

There were indeed responses and an ALLY discussion.

... when I am pounding the table on a stock that seems super cheap, I often get no response and then later people pick up on the stock. It must just be false optimism, but nowadays I view no response on a pick as a good contrarian sign :)
It is the way on this thread. And I agree: no response = a good contriarian indicator (buy signal) (sometimes)
Some, if not many, of my winners have been stocks where there's been no response to my post that I'm a buyer.

I look for ALLY to move closer to, and maybe above, stated bv. (ALLY at $22.48, stated bv $28.52 (per Yahoo))

OK, jumped ship on ALLY because my initial thesis did seem to work out and took some tax losses. You went into BAC and some Gas instead and think both of them have outperformed ALLY. does that make me right or wrong. It's a bit hard to tell, because obviously I would have done better keeping ALLY and buying BAC and GS. However, given my sector allocation goals, that was not what I wanted at this point.
congrats to your win, I have no issues, because at is think one needs to look at this from a portfolio perspective. I did get a bunch of BAC around $12 and did well, so, in a way, I made my money back and then some with a higher conviction bet. I think there is a lot of, potential issues with ALLY, they are a great deposit gathering machine, but I don't like the way they invest them, the car lending business is poor and I don't like the mortgage business either, because that is what caused to go get into receivership to begin with (when they were GM finance).
