"Invent?" Hell, there are plenty of "invented" devices that could be built in fairly short order. You just have to decide on a particular technology. Building solar arrays isn't a big deal, but the energy requirement is high -- maybe a couple hundred square meters to make some meaningful headway. Of course, technology gets better over time, so the longer you wait the better it will be.

I would support putting some research $$$$ into some small test projects (there are already quite a few underway) to see what could really be done at scale.

But if push came to shove I'm quite sure we could start pulling large quantities of CO2 out of the air within a couple years or a little more.

Don't forget that we will continue reduce our reliance on carbon over the coming years to the point where it likely won't be a problem anyway.
