"We're Having a Problem with NASDAQ"

I placed an order to sell at the bid this morning, but it was not filled. Eventually the bid dropped, so my order was in the spread, below the ask.

I called Datek to find out why my order was not being represented to the market as the current ask. I was told:
"We're having a problem with NASDAQ."

That's a classic Datek explanation that really means:
"Due to a problem at Datek, Datek can't enter NASDAQ orders this morning."

However, this Datek phrase is carefully crafted so that the naive customer hears it as:
"The problem is NASDAQ's fault, not Datek's."

I pestered the guy until he finally admitted the problem is not at NASDAQ, is not at Island, but is right here at Datek. I wish Datek would be honest and admit it when they have problems.

This story has a happy ending. I cancelled the Datek order, placed it with another broker, got representation, and got filled.

There was a technical problem which hampered OTC order processing for several minutes this morning.

There were no problems with getting quotes, entering or cancelling orders, and Datek Online kept all customers informed about the problem via the Messages feature on the web site.

Datek Online makes EVERY effort to make these systems extremely reliable.
