John - my problem isn't the "chargemaster"; it's the fact that 80% of physicians refuse to take my private major medical insurance. Why? Because it is not on the approved US Government Furher's list of approved HMOs or healthcare providers. Now the hospitals do take my insurance, or at least, NY Eye and Ear did on 14th and Second Ave when I had retina detachment surgeries. But finding a physician who will take my insurance is hard. Did these physicians take an oath? They don't give 2 hoots about me. I had retina surgeons telling me to go blind because they wouldn't take my insurance. My insurance ended up paying out 80K for my 2 retinal detachments, 1 macular pucker and cataract surgeries. And they paid all the hospital expenses too. My plan costs $450 a year with a 1K deductictible per illness over a 6 month period and they pay up to 275K per illness over a 5 year period before the deductible starts again. And they pay 80% of all physician and hospital charges. It is not a drug plan. I haven't had a drug plan in over 30 years.

Most of these physicians are absolute mother fuckers and I only wish them the worst. Actually, my late wife gave the kiss of death to her Pulmonologist for not reading her Catscan properly and misdiagnosing her and a week later he crossed the street with a pizza pie in his hand and got hit by a car and died instantly.

a few years ago I had a visit to the ER for a broken collarbone, beyond an x-ray and a sling, there wasn't much else to do for me. When the hospital submitted my health insurance information, it was rejected as not being a policy holder (they used the correct policy #, but submitted it to the wrong insurer)..... not realizing their error, they then unleashed the chargemaster on me.. I received a very detailed billing, including a couple of body scans, IV fluids, a team to set a dislocated shoulder (which I didn't have), etc... it all came to just short of $15,000.

Once my proper insurer was contacted, I let them know what were the bs charges, and when the insurer wouldn't pay for them, the hospital continued to try for years to get me to pay for them! They hounded me until I told them I was hiring an attorney and planned to sue.
