Well, I imagine that's very politically correct of you. However I have travelled outside this country several times....although I rarely travel to countries that are not predominately English speaking, I have yet to meet the American who seriously believes that other cultures should speak English in order to make it convenient for the American tourist or for whatever reason. I would imagine many would hope to encounter those who can speak English, and are willing to, but this does not classify the tourist as unreasonable. Just wishful.

My son spent 2 weeks in Germany/Austria/Italy last February with his Latin class. Now he loves Germany and Austria, hates Italy. The Italians threw garbage, made rude insults, and even mugged one of the boys...they were treated in this fashion because they were Americans, it appears. Now my son believes that Italy is full of arrogant, worthless slime. Is he correct because of his experience? No. I would hope he develops an open mind as he gets older. Are you correct to presume all Americans think others should speak English because that is your experience?

On reflection, I make one exception. An exception that just occurred to me and is not attributable to "The Ugly American". If I were at an hotel in Venice or Rome that purported to cater to international tourists I would certainly expect some employees to be able to speak English.

This could even be why the other agent was complaining. Issues are not always as cut and dry as you appear to believe.
