Our Herbie turning over new leaf?

Perusing the San Fran Chron this morning while muNching on a scone and gulping down hot chocolate I see that Herb Greenberg has nice things to say. First apparently Iomega answered one of his calls for the first time, and then he quotes at length an email from a Chevron Work Group Leader, Richard Aviani, who says that they have 15 JAZ drives and more than 50 disks and have never had a problem; in fact, they have a bunch of JAZIIs on order. This all opposite a full=page ad from IOMega - with a spill over to the previous page - entitled ROOM TO BE THE MAC DADDY and mentioning JAZ, ZIP, DITTO MAX and even CLIK! complete with pickie of the Great Clickster. Oh yes, and ending message, THAT'S OK, WE'VE GOT ROOM FOR EVERYONE Hey, maybe SFC's advertising people told Herbie to Knock It Off.

>>whats the cheapest addition (as an O.E.M.)can i make to my sub 1000 comp, to make it more technologically attractive???<<

If it were my call, I'd focus on increasing ram and/or processor speeds. These items are key to running today's (and future) software and are more difficult to add later as opposed to peripherals like a Zip or CD-Rom.

I do believe that sales of sub-$1000 PCs will be great for Zip because it will likely be one of the first products this customer base might add to their system (due to smaller installed HD capacities and the low cost of initial investment). A modem would of course be another top pick.

Regards - Dale

Rock,

Expand your thinking just a little. Manufacturing cost is $2-$5 to upgrade to a case that has 3 or 4 external bays. Compare that to the premium it will cost to have the Sony name on a device that will have a manufacturing cost that is as much as the combined total of the Zip, CD-r, and floppy.

After spending the same money, what do you have? A machine without a CD, a single device that only allows you to use one media at a time, the inherent reliability problems of multifunction devices, and a machine that can not read the industry standard Zip.

>This is why Sony HiFi has a chance to get into these systems as an option, without losing the capacity to use 1.44 floppies (which BTW, are still the #1 method of transferring files from computer to computer.)<

Oh really? You must have forgotten what happened to the LS-120.

ROCKY ,my point is to swap the floppie for a zip,in these models.
if for nothing else,to brag of better perfomance for the money.
i feel marketing this simple addition could come to fruition,
as these sub 1000 wars pan out.
feel free to tell me why my train of thought is in error.

"This is why Sony HiFi has a chance..."

Rocky, if you are going to refer to a device you like, at least spell it right: HiFD! You are beginning to sound not only computer-illiterate, but just plain illiterate.
