Netscape's Barksdale Speaks Out On Microsoft
techweb.com
What is your message for VARs who have been plugging away selling the browser in the wake of Microsoft giving away Internet Explorer?

We certainly understand the dilemma and are cognizant of that. I think we are working hard to get that part of our business down. ... My basic message to them is to sell servers and applications. Just selling browsers is a diminishing business. Microsoft has become very successful, as you know, in creating a free market for the browser and are using what we believe to be illegal, anticompetitive practices. We are taking them on in two fronts in that regard. One,obviously, is the legal efforts that are on pace here, and we are pleased with where we are so far. But there is probably more to go there. And in the area of price (of the browser), we are now down almost 70 percent year over year in our dependence on stand-alone browser sales. Therefore, we are in a position to make some changes that we will probably be announcing once those decisions are made, if they are made, in the next two weeks.

<Microsoft's days of bundling software competitors out of business are nearing the end.Netscapes losses are a poignant testimony to the damage MSFT is inflicting on innovators.>

This is an odd statement since MSFT's software is more innovative than NSCP's.
