Stak,>>>Microsoft can take their time bringing out the upgrades. They can get from A to B in a leisure pace and not even break a sweat while pulling in fantastic profits.<<<

I doubt Bill Gates will go along with you on this. He is probably wracking his brains to keep top line growth above 25/30% and maintaining PE near 45. He is certainly not going to get any help from MSNBC any time soon.

True he has a hot streak going. He has won the desktop O/S and the browser and server markets are about to go his way also.

However, >>>Mary how viable is a non-WINx O/S for IA-64 for the at home pc user? What could Intel do along this line? <<<

This is where MSFT could be stopped. For the home pc to penetrate the 80/90 percent level, I'm guessing that the pc price point has to be around $500 present dollars. At $500 there is not too much left for software.

MSFT does not lack for enemies. An array of competitors rallying around a non MSFT Java standard could break MSFT stranglehold. If he is not stopped there, then there may be no stopping Bill Gates. However, that doesn't mean that MSFT can't be stopped. I just don't think MSFT can survive without Bill Gates (admittedly that could be quite some time).

As for Intel, I think everything is in place. Craig Barrett, if anything, may even be more effective than Andy Grove. This is not to diminish Andy Grove in any way - it is just that Craig Barrett may be the right man at the right time to succeed Andy Grove. Andy Grove is one of a kind - I don't think we will be seeing anyone quite like him again.
