Rupiah, Ringgit, Baht, Peso Sink to New Lows
The Indonesian rupiah tumbled to a record low, pulling the Malaysian
ringgit, Thai baht and Philippine peso to new lows. The Singapore dollar
also fell. The Indonesian rupiah tumbled as much as 7.5 percent to 8,000
a U.S. dollar -- the lowest since the currency began trading in 1971.
The Malaysian ringgit plunged as much as 5.8 percent to 4.5975 a dollar,
the lowest since it was floated in 1973. The Thai baht fell as much as
3.7 percent to its lowest ever of 54.50 a dollar. The Philippine peso
slipped 2.6 percent to a record low 46.45.
