From macosrumors.com :

On the subject of Apple's
profitability; apparently, the
gap between a small loss and
the moderate profit which
Apple announced this quarter
was made up by a slush fund
set up by Apple when it was
certain that it would be
announcing a small loss last
quarter. This fund increased
Apple's losses last quarter, but
will allow the company to
post better results when it
submits its SEC Filing on the
14th.
Although many people
frowned upon this practice, it
makes sense; to really gain the
confidence of investors once
more, Apple needs to show
that it is a viable company --
and Apple would indeed have
profited last quarter if it hadn't
been for the charges resulting
in its buyout of
PowerComputing's Mac
license. In the final analysis,
this is good for Apple, even if
it is a little odd.
