Hong Kong Markets are getting HAMMERED again tonight. Down 550 points (5.8%) to break the 9000 mark on the downside (8987).
Devaluation can't be far away. My bets are on a breakout in gold on the 16th or 19th. Any other predictions?
- Jim.

I didn't specifically mention who were really responsible for the runs on the East Asian currencies. Suffice it to say that, as so often happens, top dogs often have their underlings do the dirty work or the dastardly act for them. Some believe that Soros and the likes of him were responsible while others believe there were other underlings,
etc.

Why did the US fight in Korea? Simply because, rightly or wrongly, containment of Communism and of Russian or Chinese hegemony was the US #1 priority during the Cold War. Why didn't the US abandon S. Korea? To do so would be like going from the frying pan into the fire. The US would then lose prestige and credibility in the eyes of the Free World as the world's policeman and as the self-avowed defender or freedom, and the Soviets would win BIGTIME! Quite understandably, Uncle Sam could not afford to let this happen.

And why didn't the US abandon South Vietnam? For essentially the same reasons given for defending South Korea!!! Only this time there was the additional fear (according to John Foster-Dulles's Domino Theory) that if South Vietnam fell to the Reds, the rest of the S.E. Asian countries would fall, one by one. Did you know that John Foster-Dulles (then Secretary of State) had such a morbid concern that he had Red China ringed by a zillion missile sites and he refused to shake the proffered hand of Chou En Lai at an International meeting of heads of states. Why? He just could not bring himself to shake the hand of a member of the so-called Yellow Peril aka REDS!

It was ironic that the then avowed defenders of freedom (The US and UK) did not come to the aid of Hungarians fighting for their freedom from the Soviets in 1955/56! Why didn't they help? Apparently, they felt relatively safe, and presumably, non-interference was part of their agenda in connection with some prior top secret agreement with theSoviets to let things be.

I too have friends who saw action in N. Korea in the march from the DMZ to the Yalu River and back. Some of them told me N. Koreans, despite all the evil stuff that had been ascribed to them, treated their prisoners of war far better (were less cruel) than their Chinese captors!!!

And what if the US and its allies did nothing to help S. Korea in the early 1950s and South Vietnam in the early 1960s? IMHO, the world will still continue to spin on its axis and revolve round the sun. Most likely, the US especially would not have had enjoyed much prosperity and happiness or sent so many misunderstood (so-called Ugly Americans) Americans abroad. Perhaps many parts of the world would be radioactive and/or have carbon-cum-desert scenery!!!

It is indeed ironical that those who care to do so much for others are very often blamed for so many of the ills of the world.

<< If Clinton and his boys wanted to wreck East Asia, they'd close our markets to them >> Interesting thought Thomas - but just give a thought to the effect of US inflation if this happened! No cheap goods for the US consumer in Wal Mart - No cheaply assembled cell phones, walkmans CD players etc. - Shortages of computer assembled parts such as disk drives (they are virtually all assembled in Asia) - and the list goes on. Just go into any retail outlet in the US and remove everything not made in the US from the shelves to get the picture! The US consumer would be the next loser with hyperinflation in the US and depression in Asia..
