Gee, perhaps those software programmers need to add a couple lines to generate an audible alarm for potential collision conditions. Obviously it may be an imposition on those drinking coffee or sleeping, but you gotta do what ya gotta do!

A collision with a fishing boat would have been a career ender for the CO, OOD and others.
A collision with Anything should be a career ender.

What possible explanation is there for this?

I've been on the bridge of two different Arleigh-Burke destroyers and have seen the set up and gotten a briefing of all the systems. There are backup systems. There are backup systems of the backup systems. There are duplications and redundancies. Even a simple GPS system that small boat owners have give off alarms when you get too close to another boat.

Why aren't they releasing the name of the OOD? Why did that person wait 14 whole minutes before sounding General Quarters? Sailors died!!!

WTF is going on?

Concur. constant bearing, decreasing range is a collision course. DUH.
I spent the weekend with a group of friends at a motorcycle rally in Nakusp, BC. One of those in attendance is recently retired from the Coast Guard. His last sea posting was as captain of the icebreaker Polar Star. He said the Coasties have to take a test on rules of the road every two years. Apparently the Navy has no such requirement. He also said that while the Navy is good at cruising in formation, they do not do well interacting with civilian vessels. [all this was said in a discussion before this most-recent collision]

I'm sure this latest collision is no surprise to my friend.
