Why not use AirBnB instead of buying? Then you can go all over the world and stay as long or short as you want. A good friend was looking all over the place for a vacation home and decided to go the AirBnB route so she could spend a month or so in different places. Very happy with her choice. She rents out her place through AirBnB when she's staying somewhere else. It's become a lifestyle. She stays a month or two in different places around the world - so far 2 months in Peru, 4 months in Paris, 6 months in SF, 2 months in Russia, etc. Hard to keep up with her.
