Fewer bigger companies might employ the same number or more people that more numerous smaller companies employee.

What if there are fewer bigger corporations that are more efficient/productive and get get the same work out of fewer employees? Well in the short run that can create transition problems, but in the longer higher productivity is needed to improve living standards. If productivity doesn't increase then you tend to economic stagnation (particularly on a per-capita basis.)

In any case fewer publicly traded corporations != "fewer companies"
