Zzpat, They gained power in the same year. Democrats took control in January 2007. Nominally the recession started in December of 2007, but no one knew until the second half of 2008 because the very definition of a recession prevents you from knowing you're in one until at least six months into it. Even then, the Democrats didn't do anything but blame blame blame. Even when McCain publicly suspended his campaign to "do something" about the recession, all the Democrats did was taunt him.
