As for the word "day", that's one of the many literal interpretations that critics hang on, but means nothing really.

Well, if you are will to be non-literal, just take the whole thing as a story for children. Then its really no problem. The problem pops up when adults try to take it literally, and want the science textbooks for US HS students to reflect that. A perennial problem in TX for example.

BTW, if you throw day out then why wouldn't you also throw flat out if the text had said the earth was flat? Just claim it wasn't to be taken literally.
