I wanted to look up numbers on that:
quora.com

They are hard to find, since you can't run the same society through the repeatability matrix and try it with and without religion. But I've always thought that the whole idea of being "forgive" is stupid and contrary to social policy. You are, imo, never forgiven and never should be- at least not by some deity you believe in. What you've done you've done and that's on you and you will never, ever, be forgiven (except by other people) because there is no one in the sky to forgive you. What you can do is atone. But that's it. If you believe that, doing evil is a lot more permanent. I think it should be permanent- because then people will do less of it.

<resort of the cover of piety>

The Fundamentalists use self-denigration as the cornerstone. Given the premise that we are ALL unworthy crap in the eyes of God, it is essential to admit we are (really, really, really, horribly) flawed and that this is the natural condition of Man. Then, after wallowing and in the filth of our unworthiness we end up being redeemed without restitution to those harmed after Jesus picks up the tab. You only have to be contrite for the milliseconds that it takes to be Born Again. The rest of the time the adherents run around unchecked, only to be led astray by Satan again and again. Lather, rinse, repeat.
