I have long felt that the all volunteer force would ultimately lead to disaster as it removes the public interest from conflicts. I also appreciate the opposition to the draft from folks who experienced the abuses during the Viet Nam era where only the poor were required to be drafted.

If I could be assured that the sons and daughters of the rich and powerful would be sent to the front in any conflict I would support universal military service.

Is this new? How many of our founding fathers were killed in the Revolutionary War? I don't know of any, though I suppose there were some.

The English still do that. Prince Harry served in Afghanistan. IIRC, one of the prior generation Princes (Andrew??) was a pilot in the Falklands war.
