simple truths

Why do people fret about sub $1000 PCs not coming equiped with zip? Cheap PCs help explode the market for computers and drive demand for high margin external ZIPs. IOM wins on both sides.

Why do people say Iomega is just marketing? I've lived through the hell of a Syquest 80 Mb drive with its lever eject cartriges and 2 of 4 removable bulky heavy fragile hard disks failing. What absolute crap! I feel like taking a sledgehammer to it! My Zip drive is totally user friendly reliable unit with fantastic mobile light floppy media. Absolute heaven by comparison!

Re: Market penetration

(11/24 Computer Retail Week) Here's a quote that addresses the topic:

"By the end of 1997, the attach rate of Zip drives to new PC purchases will be 5 percent to 6 percent, which is about the level CD-ROM drives hit before they took off," said Keith Slankard, director, markets and channels Americas for Iomega. "At that point, the popularity of the product feeds itself."

I think it's important to note that:

* Zip unit volume was up 26% over the 2nd qtr
* OEM Zips were up more than 60% over the 2nd qtr
* OEM Zips represented over 35% of total Zips shipped
* OEM Zips represented most of the overall unit increase

In other words, the ratio of Zip attachment with new PCs vs existing ones is changing significantly. The installed base is now demanding Zips in the boxes.

>>I believe your numbers are too high. Remember capacity is 14 million of ALL types. Only ATAPI drives are put in IBM compatible OEM machines and I don't believe IOM can make enough of them to penetrate 10% of the market.<<

William -

Don't forget NEC and MCI, both online and capable of producing at least 150,000 drives monthly between them. And of course, Iomega is not going to just sit idly by as demand increases. They will add capacity.
