It is a FAIR game, to exchange the big potential market with some technology transfer. If the West does NOT like it, then do NOT do it. NO one, certainly NOT the Chinese gov. can force them to do it! They can keep making their product in their OWN countries, and then import them into China and paying high levy to the Chinese gov.. There is NO free lunch on this planet After all!

As for Tesla and their Western Electronic car industry and technology, China does NOT really care nor really need it. China now is NOT at all behind the West in Electronic car industry. And in the next 20 years, China may very well AHEAD of the West in this industry

. Here is a Chinese article, talks about China and their new Electronic car development, and the possibility to destroy the traditional car industry.
mp.weixin.qq.com

Starting from Sept. 28 this year, China has Enforced a "Double point system" in Auto industry. Means for Every traditional car (i.e. gas burning car) produced in China, the manufacturer will HAVE to use certain amount of money (% of the car value) to buy the New Energy points. This percentage will be increasing each year.

Plus, all Electronic cars, besides their normal profit, will be compensated by the gas burning car manufactures. Wonder why Tesla want to start shops in China now? This is WHY! Tesla has smell the bloody profit!
