I have heard the standard, ideological, sensationalist Western accounts of how Mao was a killer and couldn't care less about the welfare of his people. Fake news. Of course, you conveniently ignore, as a hardcore right winger, that there was a terrible famine that took place in China from 1959-1961. What were the prime causes of the famine?

1. Climate disaster: China suffered major crop damage caused by floods and there was a drought that affected half of China's agricultural land.

2. There was a grain shortage which got exacerbated by hostilities with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union cut off exports, aid and installation work in China because Mao referred to the Soviet Union as a phony form of communism.

3. There were policy mistakes in the Great Leap Forward, the major one being that the communes were formed to fast and the collectives created were too big, creating problems in the management of grain production. But adjustments were made and the communes were reduced in size.

By 1970, China was able to solve its hunger problem.

Start thinking and stop blindly accepting the fake news of Western Propaganda.
