Meathead,

Thanks for the comparison. I did a similar comparison and arrived at the conclusion that you can not configure a similar system from CPQ via their home online website..

They do not have the larger monitors on their website and the systems themselves are much less configurable. For example, I could not get rid of the DVD or Dolby sound. Also the modem is fixed to the machine.

This speaks to the difference a CPQ manfacturing process for desktop computers which is quite different than DELL's true BTO model. CPQ is allowing one the customer to change a few options but not to actually build the system from scratch. I think that this neans they are still primarily build to forecast manufacturers with some second process stage options configurability.

Anyway they appear to be higher priced than DELL when allowance is made for the DVD. I still have not figured out if their 3-year service plan is the equivalent of DELL.

Interesting.....

I did a similar comparison with the PentiumII 300Mhz a month ago and found Dell right behind Gateway on Price, but looking carefully at what you get is important. The clear disappointment was the awlful
Compaq configuration guide on their web site and their ripoff on adding on additional memory. I was determined though and finally after
20-25 minutes gota close enough comparable and printed it out. It was over $300 more than Dell's,.in fact it was the highest priced system over Gateway, Dell, NEC, and Micron.
Now I know why you have to buy a preconfigured CPQ thru the channel,
the internet web site sucks.
If anyone is up for the challenge to do a config with the PentiumII 300Mhz, 64M sync, 6G drive, AGP graphics card, 24x cdrom, decient sound, 17" monitor,52k modem, and win95/office97prof,. Compare all the majors and see where the best value is at.
I think Dell will have the best pricing advantage if apples to apples.

Meathead yeah except the Gateway I priced had a TV card. That would put them within $20 of each other.
