David, Because Lockheed Martin and NEC signed that "partnering to pursue global fingerprinting markets"....I'm not sure that they are going up against each other. Lockheed has the monster afis technology, while NEC has the regional and local afis experience and input machines...(provided by IDX) The scope and nature of the South African national ID project may, in fact be one of the reasons that the relationship between Lockheed and NEC was put together.......I think it is logical that Lockheed and NEC are one of the teams going for this deal.........And of course it would be very nice for IDX if they were to be the winners. Also.......I did a little bit of digging on Cook County....... Cook County is the second largest (population) county in the United States....with a population of 5 million. Cook County is made up of 143 manicipalities. Cook County is often refered to as "ChicagoLand" I must tell you that I'm a little bit excited about this NEC win and the fact that it says in the newspaper article that the suburban law enforcement agencies in Cook County, who have been using the "ink and roller" method will now be able to get results in seconds".....as this would indicate that many TP-600 class machines will be needed. Saloman Brothers estimates that the database for a county afis runs about $5 million........so even estimating $7 million on the mainframe afis because of the size of Cook County........That would leave $6 to $7 million in NEC's bid for input devices and perhaps the mug-shot feature........ So I don't believe this is a case of just replacing the afis and using existing input machines........The numbers seem to suggest that NEC has won the input device business as well. There may be a few days time needed for contracts to be signed before NEC makes an announcement...but I would expect that NEC will make an announcement......as this is a big, big, win. The 30 page Saloman Brothers report on IDX goes into quite alot of detail about which afis company "owns" each state......... Illinois is one of the states that is in NEC's corner.......NEC also controls the Western United States, Texas and Michigan....While Morpho is given 8 states...including New York, Wisconsin and Colorado. Saloman states that NEC and Morpho are users of IDX machines....and account for 28 states total, While Printrak has 20 states....the largest being Florida...then Louisiana, Minnesota. Indiana is listed as Printrak....but NEC just took the new afis deal there. Cogent is listed as having one state....Ohio....Where IDX sold many machines a few months back. I will call Someone on Monday if the news is not on the wire.....I can't believe there is not more excitemnt on the thread about this......are we now being hush-hush about stuff we find out?........I would love to know why this NEC win should not be very exciting. bg ps. I will post sometime this weekend on other statements made by Saloman......as they are very cool......Here is an example: "Our 12 month price target for Buy-coded IDX shares is at least $13 to $14".........."We believe that our estimates have upside as they exclude explicit results from the recent Sylvan joint venture and the potential for rapid acceleration in new low-cost biometric device acceptance."
