These are tough issues. How DO you allow people
to block what they don't want to hear without blocking people's
right to talk? And to be heard by others? Kind of like
TV versus, well, chat threads, isn't it?

I guess it comes down to the fact that nobody forces you
to read the thread or any other message. Maybe a simple
"clear" button by each unread message would do the best job.
Then I could clear the message without actually looking at
the nogood's text (and if the headline was interesting
enough ...). We should just be responsible for ourselves, huh?

Regards,

Spots

Brad, I use the PeopleMarks feature to highlight people I DO want to listen to and Ignore everything else. On very active threads with a hundred or more posts daily it is impossible to keep up.

So I spend a day or so slogging through every message until I identify 2 or 3 people who know what they are talking about. I PeopleMark those 2 or 3 people and read only their posts. That way I get a very good overview of what is going on without reading every post. I know I will miss a few important posts but that is a trade off I'm happy to make.

Re: ignore functionality

I don't think I'd use it (too many people I do want to read are likely to react to idiots, so I had better read the idiots, too), but I think there are those who would prefer ignore functionality.

I think the concern was with automatically limiting posts based on ignore... a cabal could conspire to ignore someone if that would damage him, etc. Better you quietly notice that someone is getting ignore flags, and check up.

An appropriate automatic thing might be to let someone know, perhaps when they are looking at their personal profile, that they are ignored by N people, without telling them who. Whether to show this to other people is rather less clear.

Dick

Brad,

It is a very tough issue that has been debated ad nauseum on numerous threads.

I think we can generally agree that the linkage between a user's ignore count and some sort of adverse consequences can lead to unwarranted and thus undesired results. So, moving on...

From my point of view, the most significant consequence of allowing users to filter another user's messages will result in them viewing many messages out of context, since they will see the responses but not the original target message. I'm not particularly concerned about the consequences to the filtering user, but rather with those who will have to put up with their sometimes uninformed responses.

If you are going to implement a filter, it would seem that you will have to adjust your next/previous logic, and your "new message" logic. (I would presume that thread listings, search results, and direct links ("(674)") would be unaffected by filters.) That being the case, it might be beneficial to have four navigation options from each message:

Previous-filtered
Previous
Next
Next-filtered

Alternatively, there could be a global toggle for filtering on/off, and next/previous would resolve to the appropriate message, depending on whether the user has filtered another user's posts and whether or not they have filtering active.

It's a tough call, but it's yours to make.

Personally, I'd rather see enhancement in the search engine function to allow keyword operators, and the ability to seach specific threads or a specific user's messages. But, I don't sign your check....

Whatever you do, or don't do, thanks for the effort.

Brad, re the ignore function - I was 74.8 % joking.

I think there are a number of usability isssues with implementing this, as well as the wider big brother issues - and I certainly do NOT think you want to start "coaching" the unpopular!

But I do get tired of these: "Anyone know when earnings are out?" and "Why is the stock up/down today?" etc.

Can you let me filter those? Or have the system automatically post replies, along the lines of "Look it up, you idiot, you're already on the internet" and "Because buyers/sellers outnumber sellers/buyers"?.

Kevin

Brad, Kevin Watson and I were discussing some new implementation ideas for the bookmarks area which may make the SI experience more functional:

Hi Brad,
Again, many thanks for your efforts. This SI surfing is getting real slick.

I would also like to see an IGNORE feature added with an additional option of being able to set it to ignore any responses to the poster on my "ignore list". This I believe would go along way in self regulating the discussions.

As long as I am doing my own filtering, I do not see it as a big brother concern. This is the important difference IMO.

I am always looking for ways to be more efficient with my time. Aren't we all? Well most of us anyway.

Cheers, Bob

Humble question, Brad. Seems all of my talk.techstocks.com bookmarks are working again, and access is smooth as butter.

Does that mean the hack attack is over? Did you get the culprit?

Thanks!

Brad, I use Don's approach to reading very active threads (Intel for example). Would it be possible to add an option in the "View People marks" for "Messages Posted To The Poster"? Many times I want to find the response to a post but can not unless I read the whole thread. If I am a little behind it might be several thousand posts. With the option to view posts TO the poster in the PeopleMarks I would be able to find the response to the original post more easily.

The option could be similar to the TO ME and FROM ME option for my own posts.

I am more impressed with SI since I found out you do the entire operation with three people!! I hope you find a way to make money with this operation. The big guys, IBM, INTC etc. should contribute somehow??

Thanks for listening
