Look what's happening all over Europe.

We have to be careful comparing ourselves with Europe. European countries are inherently tribal. That's how they were formed. The US is founded upon an enlightenment concept that embraces all who are "dedicated to the proposition..." That is the essence of American Exceptionalism. Tribal countries, however westernized, have difficulty tolerating tolerating large numbers of outsiders. In the US, every one of us either is or derives from outsiders. When we reject our foundational "proposition" and instead emulate the blood and soil approach, foster tribalism, we undermine our very foundation. That's how we leave ourselves open to the European mess, not by excluding Muslims who subscribe to our approach.

And btw, for the record, Sharia Law is simply not compatible with Western Values.

Neither is Christian theocracy. We need to eschew theocrats regardless of religion. Yet we have Alabama likely voting into the Senate someone who not only favors theocracy but tribalism and who rejects Constitutional principles. Sure, we should screen out anyone who comes to the US intending to follow Sharia rather than US law. That's not the same as screening out Muslims. And framing it that way is both contrary to our values and unwise in the long term.

Just as there are Christians and then there are Christians, there are Muslims and then there are Muslims. We should be less interested in their religious affiliation than in, as MLK once said, the content of their character.

Fostering bigotry is never constructive, always ugly. It's ugly with or without the orange hair.
