Thanks, C.R. For a stock rated as a must-have tech by some pundits for 1998, its sudden and precipitous fall caught all us longs by surprise and particularly hurt those with a closer horizon. Only shorts could really appreciate the drop but I doubt many of those planned for what happened.

A long and gradual fall would have suggested deep problems in the company or industry. Adaptec's fall from the low $50s in early December to $21 on 9 Jan, after years of very notable success and earnings the previous quarter that beat estimates, suggests to me more of a situational problem than a long-term disabling illness. I thought 35 was a buying opportunity and look at the price now. We are unlikely to see a better buy of this stock for some time. Some may want to wait until the formal earnings announcement on 20 Jan to determine whether or not to buy. It is unlikely the warning on 8 Jan underplayed the disappointment, leaving a chance that we will have a slightly more positive outlook on the 20th. Who knows? Insiders obviously (to me) knew something in December. Although I have not seen evidence of selling then, some have reported that on this thread. Now I would like to see insider buying. Any way we can know that?

Just some Saturday morning thoughts. Let's hope for a better week ahead.

Regards to all,

Starowl
