I was aware of some soreness on my back (one side only) thought maybe I'd injured it, then the 2'nd day began to wonder if it was poison oak, and in the evening when I looked in the mirror I was pretty sure it was something else. Then I noticed a few spots wrapping to the front. But all on one side of my body, spreading from the spine in the back, i.e. lying along what would be a single nerve bundle. I knew I had chickenpox as a kid. I'm 56 which is around the right age. (50% get it before 60y and 50% after) It wasn't on my face, so the danger from optic nerve problems would be low, typically you get a single nerve branch and mine was nicely located not to cause problems. I read up on it. My choice was simply to do nothing and watch it (a perfectly good choice BTW) or try to get some anti-viral drugs, which help a bit (how much is not clear). If I didn't have a rash, I likely would never have known.you should be thankful that you have enough on the ball to make some rational decisions about your own health............ most do not. Yes, I realize that. But if you have some technical background, a bit of math and a good stat class in your past, you can likely read and understand almost any medical paper. PubMed is a great source for searching. There is a lot of jargon, but its not too difficult to decipher, and you can chase down any rabbit hole on the web as needed.didn't you know any premeds as an undergraduate? Yeah, I used to tutor lots of them in math and physics, LOL, and quite a few of them I would not want doing anything on me. I would advise anyone to get up to speed on their own conditions. There are plenty of resources available for doing so. You have your own interests much more at heart than your Doc does.
