Larry S. << ATHM threatened by NLV >>

The market will support several suppliers. Just like dd's, pc box
makers, dsp semi's, memories, telephone, and all those others. ATHM
doesn't have to be alone, just smart. A broad range of solutions
WILL be available. Several anyway.

Hi Larry....I'm also looking into becoming an owner of @Home.

Anything at this point would be better the my 56.6.....which is useless because my ISP is still at 26.4 when I use IE. However when I use communicator I can run at 56.6?

Can anybody explain that one?

<<ATHM vs NLV:-
THe cable companies signed a mega deal to buy 10-15 million cable boxes from NLV (NextLevel AKA General Signal). THese boxes will be able to do most or more than what the @Home boxes can do. Isn't this a significant threat to @Home? >>

What @home boxes are you talking about? My understanding here is that @home is not a box supplier. They are an ISP. They use a cable line and a modem to connect to their service. The modem is currently Motorola(at least that's what they told me)but expect to see other modems soon. Though I am having a hard time understanding how @home and these set top boxes fit together. I think we all need to understand this in order to make intelligent decisions here.

So here are a few questions maybe someone more knowledgeable can answer?

1. Do these set top boxes require a cable connection or can they work via existing telephone lines?

2. If they require a cable connection, then wouldn't @home be the service that connects to the box? If not, then how would this work.

3. Why is there software in the box? Maybe for the same reason there is software on my computer? In otherwords, these set top boxes will simply replace the PC and with no software they wouldn't work. At least that's how it appears to me.

4. If @home is THE supplier of the SERVICE (vs. THE BOX) then why would NLV be considered a competitior or threat to @home. If anything, I would think it is a plus in that it would make it even easier/less costly to connect to the internet for the millions of homes that aren't currently connected to the internet or e.g. want a separate connection for their kids or whatever. I thought the whole idea was to make it easier for the masses.

Anyway, these are just some of my thoughts. They may be right, wrong or somewhere in the middle. But if someone could explain this once and for all it would really be a tremendous help to me and I'm sure others who are somewhat confused and simply trying to gain a clear understanding of what is really going on here. Thanks.
