You'd think it must have been easy for China to stop their self-sabotage with decades of self-imposed isolation great leaps forward (which were of course actually quite a ways backwards) and get down to business - but this was in fact quite remarkable.

Having completed their cities, China is destroying the city tenement homes of workers from the rural countryside leaving them no option but to return to the farm - no longer having any place to live in the city apart from living on the street homeless. And who is doing the demolition work? The remaining Peasants from rural China of course before they too return to the rural Back of Bourke regions of China.

Russia continues to demonstrate that self-sabotage remains the easiest choice, long after Peter the Great attempted to westernize Russia. Peter merely achieved cosmetic changes in how Russians dressed and groomed themselves with cudgels like the "Beard Tax". Russian culture otherwise remains in full anti-progress mode. It's not that there are not plenty of smart and creative Russians, but they have to leave Russia to find a place which allows them to produce businesses like Google.

“China must have an example like the bankruptcy in Detroit. Only if we allow local state-owned firms and governments to go bankrupt will investors believe the central government will break the implicit guarantee,” Xu Zhong, the head of the agency, wrote in an article on the financial news website Yicai.
